Opening Act For Gogol Bordello

Apostle of Hustle, or to be more direct, Andrew Whiteman, lead guitarist of Broken Social Scene started things off for the night.  He said that being on tour with Gogol Bordello was exactly how one might fantasize.  It was just him and a drummer.  On some of the songs the percussionist went over to a smaller drum set than the standard.  The first song was not bad, but for a while it sounded like I was listening to the band from outside.  Something was going on with the sound, but maybe that's just how it was up in the front of the stage.

On the third song Whiteman set up a couple large flags.  There was a guitar riff that sounded awfully familiar, so perhaps it was a cover or remix.  In either case the drummer's arms had some major vein popping going on.  His beats were always driving the song.  After this one came a song that was begun with Whiteman spitting out vodka in the shape of a cross on stage.  He proceeded to spray what he did not drink out onto his drummer in a nice thick mist.  During the song he finally took off his turtleneck jacket.

A song with some nice drum looping was dedicated to Easy-E.  After this one came a decently energetic song that was introduced with Whiteman saying, "Battle music yo."  The band followed a mostly instrumental piece of music with an okay ending song.  They were entertaining to be sure, but did not seem the right opener for the super energy packed Gogol Brodello.  Sometimes it also felt like there was an instrument or two missing, but they did great for a two man band.  Perhaps if the sound was better in the beginning I would have warmed up more to them from the start.  Still, I enjoyed those latin beats.
