Gogol Bordello (1) 10/12/2009

I have been waiting for this show for a long time.  Being first in line was a necessity, which guaranteed being front and center.  It seemed an eternity for them to come on.  Finally, gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello came on stage one by one, playing as they arrived.  Lastly the lead singer, Eugene Hütz showed up and let me say that seeing him gave me instant happiness.  His presence is amazing just in being there.  The rest of the crowd felt the same way by the cheers at the sight of him.  From then on it was a undulating sea of people.  At times we were jumping up and down or trying to keep our spots, or even just trying to stay standing.

You could tell the band enjoyed playing.  They were also moving around a lot and Eugene was constantly going to the edge of the stage which always caused outstretched hands, pumping fists and just a lot of enthusiasm from the nearby section of the crowd.  At one point a member of the band had a short crowd surfing trip.  I was hoping Eugene would jump too, but he did not.

To my left was the usual jerk who thought that he did not have to earn being in the front by coming early but could merely use his height and strength to force his way to the front.  There was another behind me who thought I seemed like a good resting spot and so laid his arms over my shoulders like we were best friends or something.  Then to the right I was pressed up against the bare sweaty chest of a man.  I was feeling the heat too but I did not have the luxury of a shirt I could unbutton.  Besides this the show was energy packed and constant fun.  They opened with a favorite, "Ultimate", and later did their most famous song "Start Wearing Purple".  At one point I was confused what song they were doing, but it seemed like they were stringing parts of multiple songs together.  Every one was enjoyable.  I am not much of a lyric singer at shows but this was an exception.  The band did the usual encore performance.  Afterwards they all shook hands with people in the front.  I was lucky enough to at least touch Eugene's finger tips.  My fiance was given a guitar pick though!  The next day I was sore from holding back the crowd from crushing me, but it was definitely worth it.
