Richard Shindell (1) 9/23/2004
[All the Way from S. America]

This concert was a few years ago but it was one of my favorites.  I had only learned of Richard Shindell maybe 6 months earlier but loved his music instantly.  The timing of the concert couldn't have been better because I'd had just enough time to absorb his whole catalogue of a half-dozen albums, including the new one that he was promoting at the time, Vuelta.

Shindell is an interesting character.  A New York guy who briefly trained to be a priest before turning to folk music and, later, moving to Buenos Aires.  His songs are really beautiful though and he boasts excellent singing and guitar skills.  He sounds best with a band, in my opinion, but was just solo for this show at AMSD.  He played songs from all his albums, took requests and was really friendly and talkative with the crowd.  It's hard not to interact in a setting as intimate as this one.  We had front row (more accurately 'front pew') seats which was a real joy.  I had my camera but this was before I got serious about photography so my shots were all pretty shitty.

As is the norm at this little venue, Shindell and his opening act (Robbie Schaeffer of the band Eddie From Ohio) spent time after the show mingling with concertgoers in the lobby, signing cds, etc.  I joked about how I almost wore a t-shirt with Che Guevarra's name written on it in black marker, owing to his song, Che Guevarra T-Shirt.  He thought that was pretty funny.  My girlfriend and I chatted with him for a good while about his music and life in Argentina.  He couldn't be a nicer guy.

I really want to see him again some day, preferably when he's touring with a band.  He has since released an album of unusual cover songs (the name escapes me) and will hopefully be putting out a new album of original material soon, and touring with it.
