It wasn’t until about 15 minutes after I got to Bar Pink and made my way through the crowd to the restroom, that I realized the music was coming from live musicians, or rather mc’s. I was pleasantly surprised to see two young “hip” females rhyming into the microphone, accompanied by smooth, understated yet creative beats. Addiquit was formed by Bethany Whitmer, originally from Spring Valley, CA in 2003 when she met her beat-maker Machindrum. They were nominated for San Diego Music Award’s Best Hip Hop group in 2007 & 2008, and were invited to open for Cat Power in 2007. It is perfect music for the edgy dive bar environment, or background music for a party. The two female vocalists emceed in breathy, low, monotone voices, creating a fun air of mystery and intrigue. It reminded me of  M.I.A.’s slower, more rap oriented tracks, however they were unique enough to hold their own. They made a fan out of me, and I would encourage and one to go to an Addiquit show.
