San Diego, CA

Belly Up is probably one of the best venues San Diego has to offer. Dark, with vintage pictures, posters, and signs on the wall, Belly Up is like your neighborhood dive venue, but lies in the midst of beautiful Solana Beach, making even a $5 dollar show seem grandiose. Its large enough to fit a good amount of people comfortably, but can get crowded for a good show. Go early if you expect to sit down, since most of the seating is first come first served. There are two bars, and sadly, both are cash only. I once asked for a cute cocktail, and they didn't even carry the liquor -- so beware of expecting more than hard alcohol and a cold beer. There is also a smoker's lounge (and for smoking of all types!) right out the side door. The venue gets some really amazing artists to come play, and I recommend giving any artist a try that can book a night at this local favorite.

Old Man Hands (1) 11/18/2007

Opening Act For Sea Wolf
The venue was close to full as these guys started to play and it was difficult to hear because of all the talking. Shut up people! It didn’t help that they started the set off with just an acoustic guitar and a violinist. After a couple songs the lead... Full Review

Opening Act For Sea Wolf
[Dueling Keyboards]
I’m always entertained by the folks who dance in front of the band when the floor is completely empty. The first couple of songs it was some guy in his mid/late forties. Then he took off and some girl took over and wouldn’t you know he came back and they... Full Review

Tim Reynolds (1) 11/12/2007

[In a word...dynamic]
Tim put on quite the show for about two hours. It was a magic carpet ride without the drugs. He would switch off between playing a few songs strictly instrumental and then sing a few. I’ve never heard someone get the sounds out of an acoustic guitar like... Full Review

Pieta Brown (1) 11/12/2007

Opening Act For Tim Reynolds
She’s got a very soothing voice. At times it feels like Mazy Starr with a hint of Lucinda Williams. Some of the highlights for me were “ Take Me Home ” which is a song she wrote for the soldiers, a bluesy song which I don’t know the name of (she says... Full Review

Meshell Ndegeocello (1) 10/16/2007

The band started off with an instrumental that showed the crowd this is a good group of players. Unfortunately, the next couple of songs lost me, but they pulled it back together after that. Meshell did a cover of Joy Division’s “ Wilderness .” It was... Full Review

Mew (1) 4/8/2007

My girlfriend’s brother turned me onto this band and I really got into the CD (And the Glass Handed Kites). So I was certainly happy to see them coming to San Diego and in particular to the Belly Up. They put on a good show, but the sound guy kind of... Full Review

Oh No Oh My (1) 4/8/2007

Opening Act For Mew
“You know how I know you’re gay? Because you like…” (40 year old Virgin) The lead singer reminds me of Paul Rudd and that’s the first thing that came to my mind. They put on a decent show. The music was ok. It was interesting to see the head band wearing... Full Review

Son Volt (1) 4/4/2007

I enjoyed the show, but have to say the new band has some big shoes to fill. I’ve seen Son Volt several times at this venue and each time they’ve brought the noise. Very tight. This show felt a little like a roller coaster, but at the end I was still... Full Review

Opening Act For Son Volt
The first song was pretty strong and I thought “this could be really good”, but I didn’t feel that way at the end of the set. Don’t get me wrong, they put on a good performance, but the music didn’t draw me in as much as I thought it would. The lead singer... Full Review

Albert Hammond Jr. (1) 3/5/2007

Albert and company put on a great show complete with a few bits of comedy laced throughout the set. Including a comment by Albert referring to one of the other band members “so and so is married, but he’s looking for some fun…” They also played a new... Full Review

Opening Act For Albert Hammond Jr.
[Rock isn't dead!]
I was losing hope, but guess what? Rock isn’t dead. It’s alive and amplified as witnessed tonight by the fellas from Mooney Suzuki. Hands down one of the best rock shows I’ve ever been to. I’d never heard their music before tonight, but certainly got... Full Review

Sparklehorse (1) 2/7/2007

After deciding to go see Sparklehorse I went to their myspace.com/sparklehorse page and listened to a few of the tracks. (I’m not familiar with their stuff) Mellow, but pretty good I thought. I was pleasantly surprised. They certainly played a few tunes... Full Review

Get Back Loretta (1) 11/9/2006

While I enjoyed their performance tonight it was lacking something that I saw at the Soma gig several months ago when they opened for Jonah. I felt like they didn’t play a couple songs I remember hearing at the other gig, but they did play “ Gotta Believe... Full Review

Opening Act For Get Back Loretta
I got lost in the first song…literally. It was very random and all over the place. Same thing with song #2. Song #3 starts off with a loop playing and the drummer and guitar player trade places. The drummer looks like Jesus by the way. After this song... Full Review
