Ashley Matte (1) 3/18/2009

The Ashley Matte band consists of herself and Rod Quevedo, Keith Larsen, Ryan Hafer, and Ron Richard, however there were only two other members on stage with her, another acoustic guitarist, and a drummer. Ashley sang lead vocals and the drummer did back ups, with the second guitarist occasionally chiming in. Every song was very slow. Ashley informed us first thing that her song was going to be featured on the television show “One Tree Hill” and the second time she addressed the crowd, it was to tell us that she hopes a song off her new album will also be picked up by a TV show. I can definitely see that happening. While she is obviously a talented guitar player and has a nice, smokey, alto voice, it sounded like something moms and high school girls in the Midwest might like. Melissa Ethridge meets the Indigo Girls. Every song kinda sounded like a saunter through some endless field of wildflowers, but I wanted to start running where the music never did. I was trying to envision anyone dancing to this music. Ashley stomped gracefully around the stage a bit with the occasional shoulder twitch, yet all anyone else could do was sway. While it sounded 90’s, it also made me think that the girl with guitar thing is virtually timeless. It’s been done and that’s why it’s so hard to break through. And most girls just sing about boys…or love…or other girls in love with boys anyways, which to me is a poor show for the female sex. I can see how Ashley Matte might be considered a respectful musician, it wasn’t a bad show, but it was a boring show. It would definitely make good background music to a scene involving a country fair and a summer sunset.
