This blues rock band from Austin was truly amazing. Black Joe Lewis is the frontman/guitar player for the group, alongside Sugarfoot Watkins, Big Show Varley, Wild Bill, Rooster Andrews, Slyder, McKnight the Night Train, and Sleepy Ramirez. There were two guitars, a bassist, a horn section with a trumpet, trombone and saxaphone, and speedy speedy drums. Joe Lewis killed it on guitar and vocals. He cites James Brown as an influence, and it shows in his voice. Watching Black Joe Lewis was like going to another time and place. They carry with them a sense of southern hospitality, and their energy was on fire. All the band members wore long sleeved, white, collared, button down shirts, and the horn section wore black vests and hats. Joe Lewis wore a black shirt, differentiating himself from the group. The horn section had choreography and everyone was dancing. They had songs that involved audience echo participation, songs that started out slow but grew and grew into fast paced craziness, and songs where Joe Lewis was on the floor murdering his guitar (which had pictures of half naked ladies on it). It’s hard to tell how many people were there to see them, or to see the opening band, but by the end of the show everyone in the crowd was a fan. It was one of those shows you want to be at all the time.
