Mogwai (1) 5/15/2009

After a long set up, Scottish post-rock band Mogwai finally came on stage to a crowd desperately anticipating their arrival.  The band spoke some during the show, but there was probably only one instance where there was enough speech to hear their accents, which is unfortunate.  There are not a lot of known Scottish bands touring around.

Guitarist Stuart Braithwaite needed adjustments throughout the show and was farthest from the sound guy, but it turned out well mostly.  On the first song though his guitar went weird with an effect and someone else had to come on stage to fix it.  By the next song I realized the drunk people had converged with a couple pushing their way to the front.  There was one who tried to converse with me, but after ignoring him and in so doing incurring slight verbal abuse, I only had to endure every other of his excited air punches accidentally clipping my shoulder.  The drunk guy behind me spilled his beer on my exposed feet.  He was probably the one who said, "Satan loves you!  Or someone else!  Probably him, he's the only one that matters!"  Later, during a part where the music picks up he added, "I told you Satan loves you!"

After the eighth song "We're No Here" where all guitars were switched for new ones, the crowd's drunk section got into a swaying motion.  Braithwaite apologized beforehand for going to a quiet song, but let us know a louder one would follow.  During this one he was given a drum throne to sit on which was shortly after taken away, making it seem hardly worth the bother.  The next two songs had my pants vibrating, though the former was far less aggressive.  The crowd cheered and clapped for an encore which they received in the form of "My Father My King", a long one for those who do not know.

There were a lot of hits played which was great and they played well.  Guitarist John Cummings did go off on someone in the crowd about something though, seeming to tell them to be quiet.  Also, bassist Dominic Aitchison seemed bored the entire show, but that may just be his personality.  These minor issues aside, it was a great time with a satisfying Mogwai set.
