Opening Act For Crash Encore

Publicists is a San Diego indie rock band.  In his words, "We're kind of a rock band."  Radio station 91X introduced them and they began with very few in the crowd.  The lead singer, Ryan Johnson looked like he could be Jeff Foxworthy's younger brother.  I mean this in a completely objective observation.  His guitar strap was arrayed with multiple buttons.

The first song started off with plenty of energy from Johnson.  His singing style would stay this way the whole show.  This is a good thing in one way, but also made it too predictable and not dynamic enough.  I was pleased at one song when he at least sang some "Hey Hey"s.

There were many smiles, mostly between Johnson and the bassist, Mark Anderson.  It was something that happened when Johnson pointed to drummer, Brad Filip though that made the singer laugh out loud while he sang.  Maybe they were laughing at musical mistakes that no one else would notice, but that is just a guess.  It was nice to see the band be so easy going in the face of a very poor turnout.  They still did play well also.

Johnson described one song as "funky fresh", but it continued to be go basically along the same lines as all the songs.  He had a good singing style, but it would have been nice if he changed it up in some way sometimes.  He did give out CDs for free and they were the good kind, not made in his basement discs.  The ground work is laid out by this band, but they need to add something more to get people more interested.
