The New Archaic (1) 2/26/2009
Opening Act For Crash Encore

Radio station 91X put on the show for the night and so were introducing each band.  The New Archaic is a young band from Encinitas, California.  They had a female violinist who had her apparent boyfriend sitting in the back.  One song she was not in had her sitting in his lap while she waited.  Unfortunately the violin often could not be heard well.

During the third song the lead singer stepped to the side and let us know for this part it was, "Joe on guitar."  It was not worth the mention though.  Joe often did get into the music, once walking to the edge of the stage while playing in a way you would think he was about to jump off it, then going all the way back to the drummer before returning to his spot.  The third song had the violinist confused if she played and so after asking, she played, but still uncertain.  After the fifth song, the lead singer introduced the whole band.  This was followed by a song with a couple instances of feedback.  In the end they let us know that they would hang out, but it was past their bed time, ie: they are under 21.  It was funny to see a large portion of the crowd disappear when their parents left with them.  It's great to have family support, but boy did the place get empty.

They were two out of five for plaid shirts tonight. It was just as well since they sounded more like a young alternative rock band than an indie one.  The singer was not bad, but his reach exceeded his age grasp I believe.  They had tunes with some catchy parts, but they seem not ready to be what they are attempting to be.  They do very well for their age and if they keep it up, things could work out for them.  We will see.
