The Walkmen (1) 1/19/2009
[The Walkmen at the Belly Up]

The Walkmen took the stage and immediately began their set with their least energetic song. A brass section consisting of two trumpets and two trombone players followed the band out on stage. After the set opener, the horns left the stage and the band began a catchier upbeat tune from the new album. “Donde Esta la Playa,” fitting name for the song which further exemplifies the bands fancy sound. Who knows why the guitarist’s clashy tone of chords rings out high class. The bands drummer rumbles away a relaxing thunder rhythm on his floor tom. One of the more joyful rather than somber tunes, “In the New Year,” set the tone for a more positive atmosphere. The song was dedicated to the Obama family, a song appropriate for celebration. “On the Water” captures your attention. The sound of the audience in the background faded into silence. The taping of minor notes while the drummer shuffles on coercing the audience to center their attention on stage. To add to the intense chorus percussion they brought out the triangle to be banged on by one of horn players. I was disappointed to see the horn players every time they came out after the third depressing song they accompanied the band with, until that is they played a more upbeat mariachi tune with them. The singer seemed awkward when he was playing the electric. Made up for it though, belting out his lungs at the breakdown of “All hands and the Cook.” It was quite Rod Stewartesque, handsome devils. They played one of their more popular singles “The Rat” and another favorite of mine from a previous album brought up the tempo to their set before they left the stage. “Thinking of a Dream I Had,” with its galloping tempo and innocent carnival sounding organ was my favorite part of the show. Throughout these songs the drummer raced through surprisingly clean fills making it ever so difficult not to tap your toe. The band did a three song encore. They ended it with their money maker, another classy slow tune, “We’ve Been Had.”
