Finally, the wait was over. After missing the first back to back Three Mile Pilot reunion shows I was blessed to see their next show. The wait for the event felt about as long as for the band to start. It was forever. There were sound checks but then the whole band left and were gone for a very long time. When they came back there were brief adjustments, but soon they started.
The first song was an old one and it was perfect. The essence of the music that had stood so strong by itself alone for me was now being played and after years of separation, the band still was that band I thought I had forever missed out on. On the third song Kenseth of Sleeping People magically appeared on the keyboards. A fan asked lead singer Pall Jenkins if he would play a song to which he answered yes but then said he was joking. Jenkins added though that he just wanted to make him happy at least for a moment.
The next two songs were new ones, the first being a bit more interesting. Whenever a new song was played an additional guitarist came on. It was the old ones the people craved though. The cheering was loud and instantaneous on the next song, "Way of the Ocean" and many sang along. I noticed a couple drunk girls in my immidiate area, one grinding against a guy next to me which was all fine and dandy until the other had some sort of mishap where a lemon slice flew out and hit my arm before landing on my notes. Could have been worse.
There was a suprise event before the next song; it was a wedding proposal. Jenkins summoned Brad to the stage who came up and talked about his shy girlfriend of five years (to the day), Ashley who was coaxed to come up there with him. Putting his beer down he got on one knee and pulled out the ring and Brad said after, "It's a go." This was the only clear evidence of a "yes" as no word was heard from the girl who seemed simply in shock and disbelief. Further in the show she would bring bass player "Zach" Smith and Jenkins shots as some kind of appreciation.
Several songs later the encore came and Zach was finally on the keyboards and they started with a fan favorite, "Circumcised". Looking over at him I noticed for the first time that Zach plays cross handed. It worked well enough for him, but finally at the very end there was a mistake though from Jenkins who had trouble with the lyrics in "Bolivia" for a moment. Ignoring this minor error, the show was perfect and everything I hoped for from a legendary band like Three Mile Pilot. Now the next wait is for their new album which may be shorter of a time than their reuniting, but still too long for fans like me.
