Canes used to be a good place.  There used to be 18+ age shows but then that was ruined by some stupid kids and a stupid bartender who served them.  Now it is only 21+ which is fine for me, but I remember the days where it was a struggle to find a show to go out of the few good all age venues (for those without fake IDs).  Canes has seating for the weak legged and is right off Mission Beach.  Unfortunately the amount of good bands coming here has dwindled.  If there is a good band you like coming here though, it is a decent place to see them.

Butthole Surfers (1) 10/17/2009

I’ve never been to a Butthole Surfers show before that October night. I only knew their shows by reputation—naked women dancing, live sex onstage, live sex with the stage equipment, etc. So needless to say, I didn’t know what to expect. A plain white... Full Review

Daniel Johnston (1) 10/23/2009

The crowd cheered at the sight of Daniel Johnston back stage. He seemed reluctant to come out. The first few songs were the raw trueness I was expecting from Johnston. He was reading from a white folder atop a music stand the entire show. This was not... Full Review

The Hymns (1) 10/23/2009

Opening Act For Daniel Johnston
Brooklyn band, The Hymns came on stage and every member was the epitome of their role. There was the wild and fun lead guitarist, Jason Roberts, the tall silent bassist, Joey McClellan, keeping his low profile under his beanie. The lead singer, Brian... Full Review

Admittedly, I was more than a little concerned to see the Legendary Shack Shakers. I have never seen them live, but I was warned many things. “Don’t stand too close to the front,” “Stay to the sides or towards the back,” “Don’t look JD Wilkes in eyes... Full Review

Opening Act For Legendary Shack Shakers
Okay, I wanted to first start off with an apology to Mr. Biram for the all the crappy messages he got from me. A couple weeks ago, my computer was hacked into so all my accounts (MySpace, Twitter, Gmail, etc.) had some douchebag screwing around with them... Full Review

Opening Act For Legendary Shack Shakers
I’ll be honest, sometimes I give a lot shit to San Diego bands just because I’m sick of the same old thing the music scene was showing me night after night. There have been some surprises on the way but I’ve been waiting for that one spark to make me... Full Review

The Expendables (1) 3/30/2009

Opening Act For Less Than Jake
“What the fuck people? It’s a fuckin’ Monday night. Don’t you people have jobs? Or school? Or something. . .” The crowd howls in a drunken roar and raise up their bottles of beer and roach clips in acknowledgement. Hey Geoff, I think you got your answer... Full Review

Less Than Jake (1) 3/30/2009

The last time I saw Less Than Jake was about ten years ago during Warped Tour at (then) Coors Amphitheater. I was young, could never slow down, and was packed with a whole lot of attitude. It was the same with Less Than Jake at that show. Today, I’m ten... Full Review

The Flatliners (1) 3/30/2009

Opening Act For Less Than Jake
As soon as The Flatliners took stage, you knew they were bringing hell with them. Starting out with the intro from Jurassic Park , they let the audience know they were here, they were going to be big, and they were going to rock the foundations of Canes... Full Review

[Yeah, I'm Fucking Hostile!]
I have to admit, I love me some Pantera. I went into mourning when they officially broke up. And all hopes of a reunion faded to black when Dimebag Darrell Abbott was murdered on stage. I had to settle for Damage Plan, Superjoint Ritual, and Down. Not... Full Review

Opening Act For Pantera'd
[Don't get mad. . .Rage!]
First off, before I get too critical, there is a difference between cover bands and tribute bands. Say what you will but in its most general sense, cover bands play songs straightforward as the artists did and tribute bands play songs from the artists... Full Review

[Rockin' the Retirement Home]
Okay, I usually try to stray from reviewing tribute bands. Even if the band does a decent job of covering the songs, it’s almost impossible to shake off the originals. No one wants to see someone else butcher their favorite songs. Fans pay cheap admission... Full Review

The Breeders (1) 4/28/2008

The Breeders are one of those bands from the 90's that were fairly popular, but I never really dug into their music. Of course, I know the single that put them on the mainstream map..." Cannonball ." And yes, they played it, but it wasn't... Full Review

I first saw Colour Revolt last month at the South by Southwest music festival where they played at Spiro's Amphitheater. They delivered a really strong/passionate performance despite the lack of a stage. At one point I couldn't even see one of... Full Review
