Art Brut (1) 10/28/2009

Art Brut erupted on the Casbah stage around 11:15pm, opening with Modern Lover’s, “Roadrunner,” to which lead singer Eddie Argros forgot the lyrics to, a la Sid Viscious. They quickly went into “Formed a Band” with an energy and robustness that they managed to maintain for the entire performance. Art Brut has been around since 2005 and consists of Eddi Argros, Ian Catskilkin, Freddy Feedback, Mikey Breyer, and Jasper Future. They just recently started touring in order to promote their new album “Art Brut vs. Satan.” They played such songs as “Good Weekend,” “Emily Kane,” “My Little Brother Just Discovered Rock & Roll,” "The Passenger," and “DC Comics.” All of which were awesome.

Argos is exactly what you want in a British frontman. He performed, he was witty in between sets, yet always displayed proper UK manners in way that made you wonder if he wasn’t also insulting you. During “DC Comics” he came down into the audience and walked back in forth, telling some story about Batman and a comic book store. He was enthusiastic without being cheesy, and gracious while being funny. The lyrics are repetitive, but the repetition adds to the authentic Brit Pop sound. Argos always ended the songs with a lyric from another pop song, such as Morissey or Kings of Leon. In fact, he referenced other popular musicians through out the entire set.

The rest of Art Brut was also amazing. Jasper’s guitar skills were incredible, and you wondered how his arm didn’t fall off from playing so fast. He also helped with the stage antics by making goofy faces and encouraging audience participation. Freddy did a great job on bass, and Mikey Bryer’s drums were stellar. The crowd was loving it, singing along, moving around, taking pictures, shouting out requests. Overall, it was one of the best shows I’ve seen at the Casbah. Top of the pops.
