Opening Act For Goblin Cock
[Blasphemous Guitars]

Blasphemous Guitars are a cover band, but not as you might think.  They were the first opener of the night and the first to set the standard of not taking themselves seriously.  They began with having a banner put up saying "All midget Smiths coverband Morrissette: "Some bands are bigger than others". The main singer comes on saying if anyone has seen Morrissette, even asking the "door guy" saying hey buddy you can't miss them.  He shrugged and said that he'd play a song and hopefully the band would be back by then.  There was no band coming of course and so he told the audience with a mixture of humble pride how his first time playing was at the Casbah and how he was asked to open for Frank Black.  He was telling this to let us know what a great venue The Casbah is for giving new bands a chance which is so very true.

He started with playing a song on his guitar mocking the growing indie rock scene using the music of Surfin' USA by the Beach Boys.  Once the first solo song was over he said it seemed the band was not coming and that he knows we are all disappointed but maybe we would enjoy his band.  The rest of the band came on stage and they introduced themselves before starting with Queen's We Will Rock You, though played with different lyrics.  The song seamlessly morphed into another one before finishing.  The next song was Depeche Mode's I just Can't Get Enough and the lyrics seemed to be correct this time as far as I noticed or could remember.  Black Sabbath's Paranoid was played next, sung in the same incomprehensible vocals as Ozzy, though lyrically it could be perfectly correct or completely different, but I will never know. The music shifted at the very end and then I noticed some lyrics were changed.  I could not make out everything, but I got the idea it was comedy as it had been when they were not sticking to the song's words.

Blasphemous Guitars continued on going through Devo, Rage Against the Machine, The Clash, Led Zeppelin and more, sometimes using lyrics of different songs or words of their own.  They joked around in between songs when they were not joking around during them.  A guitarist, wearing leather pants, announced his child was born a week ago though was due the day of the show.  This was a good thing, but he was disappointed he could not tell his offspring it was born in the Atari Lounge (The bar in the back of The Casbah).  The crowd was pretty accepting of the comedy style of the band, though probably placated by familiar tunes of their yester years.  Still, the response was not anything amazing.  This mood would continue through the show though, so I would not blame Blasphemous Guitars.  They put on an entertaining set and that is all you can ask for when you consider their partly gimmicky, sometimes silly, but always fun style of music.
