I am Lord of the Tiki Gods! ...Least thats how I felt when listening to Christmas Island. The local duo, with the help of a guitarisr/keyboardist for shows, entertained and supplied the casbah audience with an interesting backdrop of sound perfect for the venue's coastal location. It started off with a pounding two chord tune that lasted two minutes. The rest of the show consisted of similiar formulas. Loose smacking couple of guitar chords mixed in with softer but heavy surf beats along with the accompaniment by smooth surf toned guitar licks and solos. Now, that doesn't mean the show didn't have a hard time keeping my attention. It didn't. The cartoonish surf songs were hypnotic, kept me up and focused. Alot of bands get lost in the creation of their own songs in which they forget about the short attention spans of audiences. Christmas Island knows this. They actually serve to cater such listeners. Probably not though. My actual guess is they play what they play because it's fun. They could care less about such audiences. My latest accusation comes from a song exemplifying my point called 'I Dont Care.' A more punk and less surf sound. I recall the name mostly because it was common reiteration during verse. The lack of bassist kept the sound light and empty but very appropiate. They covered 'Morning Sunshine,' my favorite part of the set. The slopply chords ring out grungy surf. The pretty brunette drummer tapped on the floor tom throughout the tune keeping it mellow and subtle. The vocal tones are quite charming especially during the high pitched "ooohoooohs" as a catchy transition from chorus back to verse. Very Brian Wilsonesque. The set was fun and great to tap your to.
