[Creedle]

Creedle is a jazz/rock/punk/and so on band from San Diego.  They were formed from four other bands that broke up around the same time and first played at The Casbah.  They began with a song where one of the vocalists came in with a voice I did not expect from his quiet nature.  It would be the first of a majority of challenging songs.   The second song started off with a rock sound, but ended into a punk style and was generally less challenging than the first.  The next song started off quiet and had some good appeal.  The following song was the most accessible song yet, sounding somehow mexican influenced and was very fun.  The fifth song was another rock/punk influenced piece that ran a head bobbing chorus, though I could not make out the lyrics.  This was one of the many songs which used a seemingly random sound sample.

Rob Crow was vocally featured on the sixth song and it was revealed the song may not have had a set structure when Rob jokingly asked them to keep this part short.  While it was catchy, there were repetitive parts but it worked in a way when you did not focus on them.  After this was a song where the vocals were not really working for the song, but Rob Crow finished solving a rubik's cube toward the end of the song which may have been more impressive than the singing.  There was a problem in the next song where the introduction sound sample was skipping, but a band member said he liked it better this way.  For someone unfamiliar with the song, you would never know there was a problem given Creedle's sporadic nature.  Their "Number one fan" came up to the front of the stage and did some vocals on this song, including bird calls in between the death growl singing of the band.

Creedle is a difficult band with challenging music, but listening to them live is a good exercise for mind expansion.  Some people do not like to explore or mix genres, multiple at that, but that does not make Creedle bad.  There is a distinction between music you do not like and bad music.  Creedle is definitely not bad music, but unless you are already into bands like Mr. Bungle, I would work my way up to Creedle before you give it a try.  If you never liked this sort of band before, but instantly enjoyed them, then you are one of a kind.
