Dent May and His Magnificent Ukulele is a solo artist with no false advertisement. He played his ukulele the whole show, swinging it around and swaying the two feathers attached and it was magnificent. All in the band had the indie nerd look, all in their own style. The drummer, who wore an old school Coca Cola shirt, lacked toms. This was not counting the floor tom, but nothing fell short because of it. Their style was a mix of tropical and '50s barbershop quartet. Dent crooned and sang a high falsetto sometimes. It was all delicious indie pop.Dent let us know what a couple songs were going to be about by calling out, "Who here likes college?" and "Who here likes drinking?” I will let you guess which got the better response, though the greater was based on one loud "woo". Most of the rest of the music were love songs. The eleventh song had a "ba, ba ba ba" part that was done differently than expected and was a great hook, but as I waited for that part again the song was eventually was over without its return. The song was still great though, but what a tease. There was a "rocking" ukulele finish and unfortunately it was over. While there were not really any super distinctive hooks, the songs were just plain good and done so well from Dent to his back up singers who gave the music that little boost to musical perfection. Every song was great, even the one introduced "This is one I didn't write." Dent seemed a nice guy as well and I count all AC Newman fans fortunate that Dent May was put on as the opener. For only one band as the only opener, he did the work of two or three openers in beautiful music quality.
