Opening Act For The Dears

Los Angeles band Eulogies had a set up that included a slide projector of someone's old family photos.  It was fun to watch as it was projected onto the bass drum which had a hole in it, so often people were severed by the gaping circle.  The band started after this imagery and the rest were ready to go.

The first four songs were very similar in the overall vibe which went along the lines of Eels and Dr. Dog.  The main connection was that while not super distinct, the songs were still good ones.  It was on the fifth one that things got changed up.  It started with bass and drums while the lead singer thanked us for coming early.  Soon enough it got into an amazingly catchy beat that had me hooked.

A couple songs later they played one that seemed a little dark compared to their mostly upbeat set so far.  The singer was impressed by the crowd's immediate clapping at the end of it saying, "It's almost as if you knew when that song ended."  One of the audience then shouted, "What's your name?"  The singer gave the band name and then the bass player asked the man, "What's your name?!"  He replied, "Greg!"  The singer then mentioned something about how they call the bass player Sasquatch.  He was a hairy guy but I did not see the resemblance.

The next song seemed to move into the other and after wishing everyone a wonderful night they were done. Eulogies played a nice set and showed just enough variety in their style that they have down so well.  It was a great start to a wonderful night of music, though they would have been a treat on their own.
