J. Tillman (1) 12/1/2009

J. Tillman is a Seattle, Washington based artist who is currently the drummer and a vocal arranger for the group Fleet Foxes. However Tillman has his own group that he is the front man for, and has been releasing albums with since 2005. The J. Tillman band consisted of five members and were the headlining group for the December 1st show at the Casbah.

Tillman himself is the singer as well as guitar player for the group. He has long hair and a long beard and could definitely pass as a backwoods serial killer of sorts. However the sound of his music is a stark contrast. The entire set was very, very mellow. It reminded me a lot of Wilco, however with a darker, more ethereal sense to it. It was also of course reminiscent of Fleet Foxes with a similar folk rock/indie sound.

I was not familiar with Tillman's work before the show, so I didn't recognize any of his songs, however it was very enjoyable. It was very slow and soothing and had an extremely organic feel to it.  They use a lot of different instruments to create their unique and full sound, which keeps the music interesting despite the fact that it is so slow.
