Jessica Lea Mayfield is a singer song writer that I immediately enjoyed. As soon as I heard her smooth melancholy country vocals I knew I would enjoy the show. The music was done well also, but would not be the same without her voice. She is a young one, too young to stay in the venue before or after playing. The bassist (initially acoustic), who was later introduced as her brother, really got into the music with rough and jerky head nodding. By the end of the set he would be playing the acoustic bass while on his back, holding the instrument up with his legs. Later the mustached and headband wearing guitarist would show his own enthusiasm with head motions when he was able to rock out more. For the most part his addition was mainly ambient in nature, a country tone of sustained music.Jessica introduced one song as being on a Starbuck's compilation CD that was made for Valentine's Day. It was a cover of Buddy Holly's "Words of Love". While it was an enjoyable version, her own music is more entertaining. This is a good thing though, since most bands would rather you love their own music more than their cover songs.Following this, Jessica played by herself with the band off the stage. It was a simple song but held up with her voice and guitar alone on a level equal to the rest of her music affirming the essential ingredient of her voice. Later though I would realize something her singing lacked. This was on a song where the music went up a notch in intensity and her voice remained the same as through all her songs, not to mention it was drowned out a bit. It might just be her style, but I believe she shows the signs of her young age. She has a mature tone, but there is a sense that she has more in her that she has not learned how to release yet. It would be amazing to hear her more raw and to express those emotions more freely. The flatness routine of her singing is only felt if it is dwelled on. The beautiful sadness is done so well so consistently, the fact they are all seemingly relationship songs is also easily forgivable. At the end she let us know they had one more song for us "ya'll" which was "For Today" another great song. Looking back, Jessica was musically but also visually appealing, from her bull ring to her owl covered guitar strap. Owls seem to be her thing as one is on her album released last year, "With Blasphemous so Heartfelt." Every song she played was a pleasure to hear and she would definitely be something to see more than once.
