Opening Act For The Donnas

The Los Angeles trio Nico Vega, which formed in 2005, consists of Aja, the female lead singer, Rob the guitar player, and Dan the drummer. The band has played on Last Call with Carson Dailey, and toured with Gavin Rosdale of Bush. They’ve made a few music videos, and have released several EPS, and one full length album.  Otherwise, they still have that mysterious, underground quality, while also having a decent size following.

This band rocked. It is my favorite type of band that can bring down the house with two instruments and an amazing front person. Rob’s guitar was intense, insane, and incredible. Dan’s drumming was mesmerizing, and his energy was so crazy that he was off his seat more than once, and knocking over a few pieces over more than once. However Aja’s vocal performance, her stunning appearance, and her ability to be in love with everything was the most memorable part of the show. Aja is a petite, albeit gorgeous, dark haired artiste with a performance style comparable to Janis Joplin’s. However Nico Vega, while having socially poignant lyrics, is more indie and less hippie.

I kept thinking to myself, those who stand in the first few rows of the Nico Vega show will get groped. Aja was hugging, petting, and climbing on anyone and everyone she could get her hands on, including her band mates. She climbed on the amps, the speakers, and sang while standing on top of the drum kit. All in a sort of warm scary way, while delivering amazing vocals. She has a unique tonality, with great range and power. They performed such songs as “Wake-Up” and “Gravity,” which the crowd knew the words to and sang along with. The band was very gracious and said that San Diego felt like home. They’re kind of band that has the potential to be huge, but you selfishly want to keep for yourself.
