Experimental San Diego Christian band, Soul Junk was the opening band for the two in the afternoon show. After a while of being inside, it began to be easier to forget the night had yet to come unless you glanced to the open doorway in the back. They started off loud with the first song. It was a new one and was simply structured but fairly entertaining. The singer, aka Glen Galaxy, was having a good time smiling most of the show. His scraggly goatee and pleasant facial features made him reminiscent of some sort of lady's man pirate, not unlike Jack Sparrow. I am not sure if that is really a compliment, but the comparison serves its purpose.
Already by the second song anyone could tell he was trying to contain himself, holding back but unable to stop moving. He did end up standing on an amp facing against the wall for part of the next song, Judah. It was an old song that did better than the last which was okay, but gave expectation for going to another level and failed to reach that point. The fourth song, Archaeopteryx, was another fun one without lyrics. A couple songs later on Javanese, it started sounding like the guitar intro to Van Halen's "You Really Got Me", but moved on to be its own song until later returning to that part of the song a couple more times. This was also the second song they had to start over, but when you have a good natured band, these instances are far less of a distraction and instead add to the experience.
On the last song I was surprised with an interestingly sparse but steady intro that suddenly had an awesome melody sneak inside in a completely non forceful way. This was the best song of their set, but over all it was a good performance. It is always nice when a Christian band does not come off preachy, but then again, I did not catch all the lyrics, so I will reserve that judgement to you.
