Opening Act For These Arms are Snakes

With Tera Melos, I was introduced to a new genre of progressive rock. The are hardcoreambientmathprogelectroexperimental. The trio is from Roseville, CA and have been steadily recording since 2004. The instrumentals are what really carry this band. While Nick Reinhart’s vocals are passionate, they are monotone and hard to understand. According to wikipedia, Tera Melos, “play a brand of music characterized by quickly alternating time signatures, start-stop dynamics, two-handed tapping on the guitar, extended open-ended bridges, and the use of effect pedals and samplers.” While I was watching the show I noticed something different, and this explains it. They used sampling machines, and were experimental with the timing of the songs, giving it a futuristic, disjointed sound.  However, when they applied the prog element to their musical interludes, I thought they might be messing up. The electronic/experiemental quality came across much better when I listened to the recorded tracks. It almost seemed like a different band compared to their live performance. They seem to have developed somewhat of a following, because there were some die-hard fans in the crowd, who didn’t even stay for the opening band. Yet despite their energy and brave prog approach, I found it a little boring.
