The Big Pink (1) 11/21/2009

The Big Pink is a rock quartet from London consisting of Robertson Furze on vocals and guitar, Milo Cordel on the synthesizer, Leopold Ross on Bass, and Joann Apps on drums. They took the stage around midnight for their sold out show at the Casbah. The beginning of the set was loud, fast, and strong, with great energy. They used a lot of strobe lights and the smoke machine, which supported they electro-rock sound, and the crows was loving it. Unfortunately, there were major technical difficulties with the synthesizer about two songs into the show, and a Casbah sound technician had to come on stage and help fix it.  They played Otis Redding’s “These Arms of Mine” during this time, which I found a bit off and it definitely brought the mood down. It was hard for them to recover afterward.

The Big Pink played their most popular song “Velvet” at the beginning of the set, which I appreciated, because I hate when the band makes you wait until the encore to hear their big hit. They also played “Tonight,” “Better Off Dead,” and finished with “Dominoes.” During the middle of their set they played several slower songs, which made me loose interest, and made the show feel kind of boring. They picked it back up again towards the end though, although the set seemed very short. All in all they were much better live then recorded. The faster songs were better than the slower ones, and maybe all the emphasis on the bells and whistles ends up being more trouble than it’s worth.
