The Dodo's show at the Casbah was so packed, it must have been sold out. This was encouraging for a Monday night, however it was extremely hot and hard to see the band. In addition, Fuel TV was filming the fairly early show, with The Dodo's taking the stage just before 11:00pm.
The Dodo's consist of 3 guys, Meric Long, Logan Kroeber and Keaton Snyder, who joined this year. They started in 2005 in San Francisco, releasing their first album in 2006, Beware of Maniacs, followed by Visiter in 2008, and released Time to Die this year. They would certainly qualify as Indie Rock, college rock, art rock; and they remind me of a lot of bands that I've seen from New York as well. They haven't garnered a lot of commercial success, however they seem to have a huge following regardless.
I was really looking forward to their show. The sound is very unique, with a lot of emphasis on percussion, experiments with rhythm, and poetic lyrics. I was mostly familiar with their Visiter album, so I was slightly disappointed that they pretty much only played new songs. Still, the talent is extremely good so it was still interesting to listen to (I'd say watch but it was so crowded you literally couldn't see anything). The crowd was incredibly into the show, pumping the air with the quickening drums, and bobbing around as much as they could in the crammed space. The Dodo's were polite, understated, and mentioned that they hardly ever play in San Diego. In fact, I think their last show was at Bar Pink, which shows how popular they've become in the short duration of a year.
