Immediately after sound checking, The Nephews started their set without a word to the audience. The first song, Spiral Stairs, was not much of a start. They only had a drummer, guitarist and a saxophone/bass/tambourine player, but I still was expecting more. I have seen better from bands in the past with even less to work from. This was not helped by the saxophonist's constant straying from the microphone, though they needed to turn him up anyways.
There were some simple chord progressions in the first few songs here and there, but it was getting more interesting as the show went on. While they did sound like more than the 3 musicians on stage, I still was not getting a sense of their sound. I was also distracted by the singer's facial expressions that were more dramatic than his vocals or even the actual music. By the fourth song though, Brick Wall, they had turned up the saxaphone, which helped bring back a fuller sound for the band and finally they were sounding more distinct. On the fifth song the verses could not live up to the instrumental part. While the instrumental was not amazing, it was still more ear drawing than the verses in more of a way than one should expect from that section in a song. The last song, Primordial Soup had a touch too much of repetition and was not a great finish.
The Nephews stood their ground as a band, but I was not impressed. The overall mediocre feeling one was left with was a disappointment. Maybe their performance would have been better received if they had opened first. The first opener, Soul Junk were not anymore note worthy as far as vocals, but at least had some songs that sparked one's senses and drew focus. The best parts of the Nephew's songs were the tambourine moments and that does not say much for them.
