This San Diego band has been around for quite sometime and like Steve Poltz's solo stuff I'm not familiar with the Rugburn's music either.

Seeing them perform was a fun way to bring in the New Year. I don't want to compare the lyrical comedy to someone like Jack Black, but there is definitely a similarity to some degree. Whether or not Jack Black would sing a song with the chorus of " I hate fucking Christmas" is questionable, but he would definitely perform a song like "Nice Bike", which is just funny. The other song that was hilarious was "Football Tonite." Here's the lyric "Sweep up the kitchen, Hurry and do the dishes, Bring me a beer mab', I'll let you go out with your other bitches, sweep up the kitchen, Could you turn off the goddamn lights? Fetch me the remote control; we got football tonite, Football tonite, Football tonite." Funny stuff. Although, I'm sure the feminists would have a field day with this, but considering who is singing the song it doesn't come across in some negative way. Good times...

My wife and I saw Steve Poltz at Anthology several months back and decided we wanted to see Steve's old band "The Rugburns". I had heard some of their stuff on the radio (Hitchhiker Joe and a few others) locally and really enjoyed their music. Although Steve can get pretty graphic with his lyrics they're always based on satire, sarcasm, and just general comedy. This was a great show to go to on New Years Eve. The whole band clowns around the whole time and overall it's just a great band to see. I highly recommend The Rugburns.
