The Strikers (1) 9/27/2009

When The Strikers came on I began to wonder if rockabilly was on its way. The hints included a standup bass played by Rob who had slicked back hair and chops, as well as the drummer.  Instead it was psychobilly, but Rob introduced themselves saying, "We're The Strikers, we play rock and roll."  The guitarist and other vocalist Joey was the physical incarnation of their other influence: metal.  It was entertaining to hear the harsh sounds coming from his acoustic guitar.  Rob was surprisingly mobile with his bass and the two worked well together to bring energy to the stage.  The band later dedicated a song to the other bands which was their "slow song".  This was Astro Zombies, a Misfits song.  I myself love the original as well as Rob Crow's cover, but they did good and made my night.  They went back to their usual style after this, which included instrumental jamming out.  They thanked someone from radio station 94.9 which put on the show.  There was also free food making it even better, but this is The Casbah's custom for the last Sunday of the month.  Later there was a "semi-new" song that was called "Dark City" and was, according to Rob, about his asshole.  That sure set the mood on that one.  Overall this San Diego band brought a nice intensity and a great sound, especially for three people.  You have to respect the small band that sounds big.  Most of all though, personally, I loved their drumhead.  Classy to say the least.
