Wolves in the Throne Room is an ambient Black Metal band from Olympia Washington. Two tall candelabras were set up as well as several small candles which was surprising that they allowed them, because of the fire danger. The first song made me think I was in a throne room, or some sort of medieval setting, though of course in a metal sort of way. They constantly were pumping a thick cloud of smoke into the room to complete the mood. The guitarist had the Scandinavian look of their black metal, though wore converse. The lead guitarist, also with tattoos, had a leatherman on his belt which was another questionable threat to legality, but I felt safe he was not going to go into a murderous rage and stab me or anyone else. The singer was small in stature and had a wild beard. The drummer had the Pearl bass drumhead logo upside down, to be truly metal I assume.WitTR were much more melodic than the first opener and so were a welcome change of pace. There was an amp problem and it was taken away, leading to an almost too long delay of time. The vocals were hard to hear once they came in, but the instruments were plenty loud. After the fourth song a man in the crowd warned me of a broken glass on the floor and later another broken glass appeared next to me. Either the bands inspire people to break glasses, or there was a glass breaking prone person in attendance.Regarding the music once again, half of it was well done black metal and the other was decent, but not as striking. The band is about more than most metal bands though, because they are eco-spiritual. They wanted their music not to be an end in itself but a means to something greater. The band founder, Nathan and his brother Aaron Weaver bought a farmstead and often play outdoors, promoting radical environmentalism. You can see the same thoughtfulness applied to their music, which while hopefully not at its peak, is doing something right and is worth hearing.
