My original introduction to Radiohead was back in the early nineties when "Creep" became a hit. One summer during the buzz of this band I was in San Diego (on vacation from Florida) and bought the album "Pablo Honey." I remember being very disappointed with what I heard. From what I recall "Creep" was completely different than the rest of the album in sound and style. Over the years I never really attempted to get into them and to be honest I'm not a fan of Thom Yorke's voice although I have dug the music. But, quite a few friends kept saying "their live show is amazing." So, I figured it was time to see what they were all about.
Before the show I had listened to a couple of their albums (borrowed from my girlfriend) Kid A, Amnesiac and My Iron Lung. There was some good stuff in there.
Showtime... It's always interesting to see the different types of people (and characters) that attend concerts and this gig was no exception. Would someone explain to me why the guy sitting behind me would clap (really loud) for what felt like 5 minutes before the show started...when no one else was clapping??? Of course, this was the same guy who was guessing every song as each one started. But of course, without his help I wouldn't have known that the first song was "15 steps." I couldn't tell you by name what the rest of the set was, but I did recognize quite a few of the songs. The show was great! They sounded really good, the light show was quite the spectacle and the band really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Thom was even dancing around at one point. So, here I am with a whole new appreciation of Radiohead. That's what I love about live music. There was a couple next to us who came down from Los Angeles to see the show. They saw Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl a couple nights before and said it was a completely different vibe. They said the Hollywood Bowl show was completely quiet to the point where people were shushing other people. The crowd here in San Diego was quite vocal...in a good way.
