San Diego band Bunky had a long set up which would seem contrary to their stripped down form of the night. They had no horn section and so had to make horn noises with their voices. Toward the end they would finally comment on the horn's absence. "We don't need them. We get more money. Fifty percent of nothing is way better than twenty-five percent." They began playing and you could tell that the songs were done in a loose fashion. They have been playing them for years, so changing things up just a bit is understandable. Also some changes may have been to compensate for the lack of horns.
On the second song a guy in a banana suit ran up to the front and started dancing. Emily, the drummer and co-singer said, "Oh my god, it's peanut butter jelly time!" This is a Family Guy reference for those unaware. He was just dressing "Tropical" for the theme of the night, though in his own interpretation. The next was another cute one, "Hippopotamus". It was on the fifth song I noticed the other half of Bunky, Rafter, was wearing coconut bra suspenders.
The next song was a toe tapper, but I really was missing the horns on this one. Emily said after we were being so nice and would say so again , but they were doing pretty good without the rest of the band. There was a drumstick drop, but it may have been caused by Rafter's changing it up which looked to have thrown Emily off. Rafter dedicated the last song to the banana guy. It was good but short. All in all they did good for their situation, though I have seen them do better. Still, enjoyable as always.
