By Sunlight is an indie band from Seattle, Washington that started off with one of the four guys saying, "Gonna get my groove on." His grooving was delayed though by some technical need which they said would be a minute and so music from the speakers was turned back on. He called back to the sound guy though, 'Not that long," and then they were ready. I was close enough to overhear a, "I hate this part" and an agreement to the sentiment, revealing their possibly inexperienced nerves. They had nothing to worry about though and started off fine with no mistakes.
The first song was not bad, but it lacked something, either personality or depth. There was a long repetitive part that seemed designed so the lead singer to put on a capo and retune. There seemed a sudden change in the song, but it turned out to be a transition to the next song which would happen for the rest of the set. Again, the second song was not bad, but was not very engaging. There was another long and mostly repetitive part, but it was actually kind of interesting. The vocals were a bit weak, so the more time past from them into instrumental parts, the better the music sounded.
The third song's repetitive part was more building, and had the musicians turned from the crowd, now facing the drummer and especially the bassist who was in the middle. After the build up it unfortunately went back to the past part of vocals, which not great in itself, also did not make for a great climax point. The fourth song had a little overhead bright light surprise that suddenly turned on in the middle of the band playing and caught them off guard, by their inquisitive looks, but no mistakes were made. Through the whole set there was good movement, active enough but contained, fitting to their musical style. There is a youthful quality to them, so that may explain where they lack. Still, with their centrel core of possibility, some good things can hopefully come from this band in the future.Photo Credit: Michael Klayman / www.seemichaelsphotos.com
