Hialeah opened the night at The Soda Bar. There was a guy from another band helping on stage who showed his butt crack. One of his friends took a picture and showed another laughing. This would be brought up again later. Bassist Mike Pereirasaid said as the lights were adjusted, "Not too low on the lights. I have poor vision." Things brightened a bit more and they played a song that turned mellow melodic when Pereira vocally took over the song. At the second song Mario Quintero was talking to another about how the neck of his guitar may have been broken. Apparently when I was not looking his guitar strap broke and his axe took a critical dive. He asked someone if it sounded out of tune and got a unclear response, but they continued playing. At the end a fan said they sounded off, but I could not tell myself.
The drummer, Justin Jay looked like an indie version of a fitness guy. His drumming seemed so fast at first since at any one time I could see ten drumsticks at the same moment in either hand. When he played slow and it still looked the same, I realized it was simply a lighting effect and or combination of the walls. The fourth song had some joking about how the guy helping on stage was showing his butt crack. "Butt crack action, keep it going." This song had a bass heavy beginning. The next was my personal favorite and was rough to an extent. The last song had the guitarists on their knees at the end to crank out the last notes. I enjoyed the music itself, but there was a personal disconnect with the vocals. The singing was not bad, but was not particularly distinctive. Others enjoy their style though and they deserved the strong applause they received.Photo Credit: Michael Klayman / www.seemichaelsphotos.com
