The Shins (1) 5/11/2009

The crowd pushed in just a bit as The Shins came on and gave everyone a "Howdy ya'll" and "How do you do?"  The first three songs were fan favorites, while the next was one that was sonically flat for the most part, but was decently held up by James Russell Mercer's distinct vocals.  The next was introduced as a new song which they said is always fun for them, but that everyone will probably be confused for half the song.  Mercer ended the chatting by jokingly saying they were selfish at the end of the day.  It was not bad and was not a departure at all from their style if you look at in the slight arc they are musically traveling.

For the next song Mercer said, "Let's see if anyone recognizes this off the bat."  I did not even recognize the funky song by even the end.  They flowed straight into the next song which was very mellow and a little ominous.  After this one they talk a while again saying that one of them saw a dolphin in San Diego.  They went on about how they like the city and ate at a fish shack.  The band then started to play, but Mercer stopped them saying he was in the wrong key.  After playing it correctly they perhaps jokingly said they were going to take surf lessons and Mercer was going to tattoo flames on his arms.  Then he spoke about throwing the first pitch at the Padres game the next day (which they lost) and added he would pitch the whole game.

The Shins played a Beach Boys cover song next followed by an "Oldy".  "An oldy but goody," another adds.  They went with a new song after this which was the eighth time they played it and after they said it was the best time so far.  After another older song a band member commented that there sure was a lot of requests, but said that, "We kinda know what we're doing."  Mercer pointed out someone in the crowd who had followed them all the way from Bellingham.  Mercer tried quenching his thirst with whisky before the last song before the encore.  He lifted the same red cup he drank from earlier to the crowd as the band left the stage.  The audience really clammered for the encore, shouting the word over and over.  Finally they came and they brought on a Delta Spirit band member to help.  After three more songs The Shins had finished a crowd pleasing set.
