Opening Act For No Age
[Yeasayer Live in L.A. (with interview)]

A few weeks ago, I saw Yeasayer play a set here in Los Angeles. It was an all ages show at the Ukrainian Culture Center, at which Black Flag is said to have also played some time ago. Yeasayer's considered part of the experimental rock scene emerging in Brooklyn, and I was anxious to see them live after hearing a few songs on their website. The band's sound is perhaps less experimental than others coming out of Brooklyn, but Yeasayer's show involves novel use of samplers and sequencers in addition to standard guitars and drums. Lead singer Chris Keating tweaks electronic gadgetry between verses and prolongs endings with echo-laden beats or heady chimes. I captured a few live clips and interviewed Keating after the show, who has some interesting things to say about what it's like to be a band from Brooklyn and L.A. club owners' affinity for "pay-to-play." You can check out the video here: Yeasayer on stage with interview.
