[Dr. Dog - Mojave Stage Coachella 09]   Venue: Empire Polo Field

Dr. Dog just gave a "Hi folks!" before beginning their set.  The Philadelphia band had their three guitarists bouncing together for the first song.  It started off so so, but soon got good as the song went on.  Before they started the next one a guitarist said, "I see what's happening here."  He then adjusted something and tuned his guitar, fixing whatever problem there was that was not obvious to the audience.  One of the other guitarists was wearing a winter cap that had ear flaps.  While they were at the tented Mojave stage, it was still hot out, so he must have really wanted to make a fashion statement.  The fake trees with Christmas lights also seemed odd in the day time, but at least they were not lit.

The music was usually good and the smoother back up vocals were nice with the grainier lead singing, but things hit a snag when a sound problem with the guitar had one band member saying, "It could be any of a thousand things."  He then asked, "Anyone have a guess?"  The rest of the band seemed to play an interlude song, but it turned out to be the next song which the guitarist joined in soon enough as his technical difficulty was sorted out.

It was fun to see one of the singers constantly straying from his microphone, but always return just in time for his part.  On the ninth song I could see why they are compared with the Beatles since the song seemed to take directly from "Hey Jude", but unlike the Beatles' song, it was not that great.  One of the musicians said after that he learned a valuable lesson one day, that he cannot play without distortion and joked that someone put a hex on his equipment.  The problem either fixed or ignored, they played on.  They ended with not their best song, but still a good one that had some instrument switching.  It was unfortunate that, after they finished, there was no more good reason to stay at the nice and shaded stage, but at least this good band allowed me and others reason to stay cooler for a short while.
