[Jenny Lewis - Outdoor Theatre Coachella 09]   Venue: Empire Polo Field

The band started playing before Jenny Lewis came on herself and she was introduced by the words, "Jenny Lewis belongs to you!"  She came out all in white, with a black bow tie and black hat.  She began with a moderate rock song that was upbeat and had some country in it.  Lewis inserted the words, 'Right here at the Coachella stage" into the second song which received cheers, of course.  The third, "You Are What You Love" was her most stand out song and was done nicely, but sadly no other songs would come near the entertaining quality.

For the next one Lewis spoke to the audience saying, "You cute girls in your small clothes, this song's for you."  It was "Carpetbaggers".  There was a mellow melancholic one next, but it had a slight kick to it.  More depressing, but in a sicker way was the next one about "Matricide", though she added, "...also it is a love story between a mother and son."  At one point the song seemed over, but then it came back with an increase in tempo.

Lewis waited by herself on stage before saying, "I'm going to play a song as soon as I get a guitar," which signaled the man who Lewis said she nicknamed "Snowball" but added that he does not like his nickname.  This solo song, written for her band was actually better than almost all the songs with the rest of the musicians.  This was just as another had warned me.  After she played, Lewis seemed emotional and may have cried.

The song after brought up a group of "friends" which included Conor Oberst who all sang and it was a good one.  The band came back on the following one which had a pulsating beat and so out came large clouds from the smoke machines.  The song either went straight into the next or had a whispering part that sounded seductive.  The second to last tune ended with Lewis folding into a ball and then she played a mellow song to finish her set.  The songs were all good to some degree, but there was a sharp divide in how engaging they were between the solo music "You Are What You Love" and most of the rest.  Still, there were no regrets at missing The Killers for her pleasing performance, but maybe that is not saying much.

She put on a good show at the Belly Up a few days before this performance. Definitely worth seeing live.

How could anyone be pleased with the nickname Snowball? Ever see the movie Clerks?
