Liars lead singer Angus Andrew is a character, no doubt. His stage presence was refreshing compared to the many acts that played it straight. He was wearing red shorts that looked to be ripped from pants and a plain black shirt, giving little distraction from the music or his odd stage movements. My personal favorite was when he put his arms in, but stuck out his hands and went in circles as if he was some sort of spinning top. He also kept flipping up his shirt to treat us to his belly. The guitarist did not act interestingly, but he was wearing uncomfortabley to watch short shorts and looked like Jason Schwartzman's older and less pleasant brother.
They started while the inbetween music from the speakers were still on and the sound guy took several seconds to turn it off. Andrew started off monotone and that was fine for the first song, but if it was his general singing style, there would have been some issues raised. Luckily the vocals changed as much as the music. There was a lot of expirimentation where one could not predict everything which they pulled off nicely. Andrew pulled out a guitar for the third song which was percussion driven and haunting. It was also the most accessible song. The following one was more aggressive and Andrew sang higher than any previous song.
The music went on from mellow minimalist to bouncy with tambourine action. On the ninth song Andrew was feeling the heat and not only drank water but spit it out so that it landed back on his face and tossed the bottle all in one motion. He may or may not have also snort out a booger, but it was probably just water that got into his nostril. After the song he said, "Guess what? It's hot!" Agreed. There was a slow building song that was followed by a strong rolling final one. They left with a nice mix of songs played and a deserved applause.
