Grammy award winner Lupe Fiasco's absence inspired a chant of "Lupe!" Finally he appeared and the set began. The music was far too low though until it was fixed in the middle of the song. There was the usual good energy from the rappers. The second song was introduced with Lupe saying, "I love Hip Hop. I love Coachella. Want to know why?" The crowd naturally cheered and then he said the song title, "Hip Hop Saved My Life." This was followed by a song that required crowd participation. Lupe smartly made sure the crowd had it down before starting the song. After an energetic song, a man called out, "Lupe, I know you! Remember that time!" This disturbing comment was either not heard or rightfully ignored. Mathew Santos came out for the next one, but he had some microphone problems he had to get straight with the sound guy. It was a good thing it was fixed before the catchiest song, "Superstar" that came a little bit later. Santos asked the crowd how they were doing and getting an unsatisfactory response he said, "You should be festive, it's a festival."The next song made my skull vibrate and that was with earplugs. The last one started very mellow which Lupe kicked off by throwing his shirt into the audience. The song kicked into high gear and then when it went mellow again Lupe lay on the stage, but then he sprang up and ran to a front speaker and stood on it. After some crotch grabbing and dancing around he returned to the stage for some posing with the back up rapper. Lupe pretended to walk off the stage to the back, but he ran back and threw his red shoes into the crowd. Someday the shoes may return to find each other, but they will probably travel to opposite ends of the country if not the world. Lupe is definitely a crowd pleaser, but that would be true even if he did not strip down and give out his clothes. The show was great with substance, energy and catchy music. You can't ask for much more.
