M Ward is an indie folk singer-songwriter who started in 1999 in Portland, Oregon. His set began rough with just him and a drummer because the sound was constantly dropping out. Ward said after, "Welcome to the sound check." For the second song a man who looked like an ex-hippie went over to a microphone and did some nice whistling. On the fourth song another musician named Dave Rawlings on guitar came in, all in denim. The song started with high energy, but became a mess of sound and was not very interesting. Most of the next songs were the same in style and usually about love. There was an odd guitar echo sometimes that interrupted the music, but it did not occur often enough to be too much of a problem. On the eighth song everyone left Ward alone on stage to play by himself. Off to the side there was a member of the press taking a picture of a band member taking a picture of Ward. If only he was taking a picture of the crowd or something similar. Now that would be a picture to see. Ward went to the keyboard for the next song and introduced the band who came back as he called their names. The song was an okay mellow one with just a moment of feedback in Ward's vocal microphone. The eleventh song was written by "...a guy named John Field." That's what it sounded like he said at least. The last song was another cover, Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven". At the end Ward said, "See you next time, cheers." The music was well done, but not particularly engaging. Those who love folk though might have had more room for enjoying his hook lacking low key vocals and musical style.
