[Peter Bjorn and John - Coachella Stage Coachella 09]   Venue: Empire Polo Field

Swedish band Peter Bjorn and John formed in 1999, but are best known for their 2006 hit "Young Folks" that has probably got you whistling more than once.  This was what I was looking forward to, but I was keeping myself open to the rest of their music.  The first song was a mellow one that was okay, but the bass was a bit overbearing.  The next song made it apparent they need more going on in the music to make it full or complete.  The music got better when the keyboard was used on the next one.  One of the musicians said after, "This is not like Sweden, but I like Sweden."  I am not sure what that meant, but it seemed to be weather related.  He went on to say how Paul McCartney stood right where he was then just a couple nights before.

After another song that seemed lacking (which may have been because the keyboards were not used), a young guy was carried out who had a bloody nose and hands covered in blood as well.  For some reason this signaled a band introduction and then they played the leading track to their new album.  On the next song I noticed the Swedish flag being waved in the middle of the crowd.  A couple girls came out to sing for the following song which really helped give more dynamics to the music.  The bongos were pulled out for the next and one of the musicians said, "The bongos mean bongo action."  The bass had become relentless in its overpowering of the music a couple songs ago, and it was not letting up.  There was fast clapping in the second last song also that became unsynchronized in the crowd.  After talking to the drummer the singer said they might have to cut the last song short.  They still ended up going past their set time, but only by three minutes. This song actually sounded full and so was a good ending.  A beach ball was murdered by security and the show was over.
