Gaby Moreno is a Los Angeles singer-song writer who has been featured on NPR's second stage, but this day the "stage" she was at was the Women's History Month Stage at cafe Claire de Lune where no wristband was needed for entry. She was introduced by an aggressive woman who practically called it a crime to not buy Moreno's album and she spoke not in a silly joking manner, but in a way to cause more than a little discomfort. Moreno took back the microphone, maybe thinking the same thing, and began playing. She wore a headband and a shirt or vest that gave off a hippie vibe and when she sang it was a soulful voice that was pleasant to hear. The backup singer could not be heard, but no backup was necessary, since she was well skilled in her vocals to be appreciated alone. There was a guy who was also wearing a vest, a girl on bass and guy on drums which gender balanced everything out nicely if that actually mattered. The second song made it apparent though that the music would not rise beyond a mediocre level. All was easily forgettable. The third song, "Letter to a Mad Woman" was the most interesting one which was from her album that came out last year. She moved on to a soothing ballad called "Since You Came Along" and then continued along to a Nina Simone cover which showed off her powerful voice even more than before. She finished off with a no less soulful original and thanked the cafe crowd. This was her first San Diego performance and her wonderful voice was warmly welcomed by the cafe patrons, but maybe her next album will have more interesting tunes so all can enjoy the whole package.
