Leaving another band early, I was relieved to make it in time as the announcer introduced possibly the best band of the day, The Burning of Rome.  Initially written off as the drudgery of the 90's, "Alternative Rock", as they were labeled on the Indiefest website and by themselves, they were anything but their false description.  Each band member wore a bright solid colored shirt with the words "FUCK HATE" largely presented on the front.  One shirt had the words in mirror form.  The first song was a funky odd sort of rock that had the apparent lead singer in his yellow shirt shouting out through a megaphone and wearing a red and white bonnet.  The next song began with a plastic candy cane striped pole used as a didgeridoo.  The yellow shirt singer now sang through a different sort of microphone that changed his vocals a bit.  The song was bouncy like a circus and soon I was getting the impression this band enjoyed Man Man and or the work of Mike Patton.

The yellow shirt singer told the crowd they were saving up to tour up north and so everyone should buy their stuff.  While very decently priced it is still tough times for many.  Some even worse off were those unable to get into Indiefest who could be seen watching in the distance on various levels of a parking garage.  The yellow shirt singer pointed them out saying the next song was dedicated to them and jokingly added "Fuck buying tickets" but then immediately took back the statement.

The fifth song started out very mellow and then exploded into rock that twisted into an eclectic style, again associated with Mike Patton.  Before the next one began, the yellow shirt singer asked if the crowd enjoyed Depeche Mode. They proceeded to play a cover of "Personal Jesus" and right after ending the singer said, "I like Depeche Mode too."  He continued to explain how he had mono from kissing some random girl to apologize for his scratchy voice, but for all the crowd knew, that could have been his regular vocals.

The tenth and last song initiated the yellow shirt singer to leap off an amp, wander around on stage with a wireless microphone and megaphone and then to seemingly fall and roll off stage where he then continued to walk around between the metal fence barrier and the stage.  A band member in an orange shirt did some stage wandering himself, but soon afterwards the song ended.  The music had silly elements to it and the singer's own rough but often wacky style.  While perhaps too out there for some,  it all came together often enough when the band sang as one, balancing things in the more normal accessible style of vocals that was created when their voices joined.  When they let the crowd know they were playing again nearby right after the set, I was tempted to join them and enjoy their music once again, but instead gave a chance to the others bands at Indiefest that mostly did not live up to the standard set by The Burning of Rome.
