Cake (1) 8/28/2009
[Cake]   Venue: East Village

Cake's performance can be summed up in one word: disturbing. Don't get me wrong, I was thoroughly entertained, they sounded excellent, and attracted the largest crowd of the night. But my god -- they are quite frightening to those who have never heard them before and are coping with slight intoxication.

At first, this winding, snake-calling melody came out of their instruments as the vocalist's deep, seductive voice added to the completely mesmerizing sound. I began to feel dizzy, not in a bad way, but in the sense that the music filled my senses and I could no longer focus on anything else but its brainwashing effect. Wow, I thought to myself, these guys are actual minstrels.

And I wasn't alone. The crowd of hundred all seemed to stuck somewhere in space and time, swaying in unity, just blankly staring at the band. They began a series of chants throughout the show, but the one that sticks out in my mind goes as follows:

"Sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell!"

Yeah, my sentiments exactly. It seemed as if everyone in the crowd was chanting along with Cake -- EVERYONE! It got louder and louder, faster and faster till the chant had transformed into

"GO TO HELL. GO TO HELL."

At this point I'm freaking out. Why on such a lovely night, would people gladly promote entering such a disgusting mental passage way? I was pretty taken aback, but Cake truly had that effect. They indoctrinate the senses through sound (and in my opinion, one's ability to think clearly) and are highly talented individuals. But yikes all the same.
